New Agreements for Liberation & Happiness

“Ninety-five percent of the beliefs we have stored in our minds are nothing but lies...We trust what we believe, and our beliefs set us up for suffering.” Don Ruiz

I recently read The Four Agreements by Don Ruiz, which offers some ancient wisdom from the Toltec tradition. Check out my video review on these four “new" agreements you can make with yourself to begin reforming your daily reality with positivity, empowerment, and transformation. You will enjoy this book if you…

  • Struggle with many fears in your life but you don’t know why or what to do about them
  • Frequently find yourself focused on negative thinking or speech
  • Tend to assume what other people are thinking or feeling
  • Tend to react to life rather than be prepared with empowered responses
  • Feel stuck and desire a new frame of reference for your life

As you listen to the video, I would like to hear from you. What fears do you recognize as being culturally conditioned from childhood? Do you ever feel stifled in your creativity or personal expression? Which of the previously listed struggles do you relate to the most?

For me, I really related to the “domestication of humans” chapter. I can think back to so many social, religious, and cultural pressures that were put on my as a young person in order to conform, causing me to give up my individuality and personal power. Most of these came about through fear-based teachings or even threats of those in power over me. These conditionings become “agreements” (when we allow our culture to dictate our behaviors, especially with fear, we basically agree to them).

“One single agreement is not such a problem, but we have many agreements that make us suffer, that make us fail in life. If you want to live a life of joy and fulfillment, you have to find the courage to break those agreements that are fear-based and claim your personal power." Don Ruiz

It’s time for some new agreements with ourselves that get us in touch with powerful gifts and abilities that God created us with. We can always recover what is lost, but the first step is awareness. Ruiz shares this as “dreaming a new dream” for ourselves.

Ruiz concludes...

“Imagine living without the fear of loving and not being loved. You are no longer afraid to be rejected, and you don’t have the need to be accepted. You can say ‘I love you’ with no shame or justification. You can walk in the world with your heart completely open, and not afraid to be hurt.

“Imagine living your life without being afraid to take a risk and to explore life. You are not afraid to  be alive in the world, and you are not afraid to die.
“Imagine that you love yourself just the way you are. You love your body just the way it is, and you love your emotions just the way they are. You know that you are perfect just as you are.

“The reason I ask you to imagine these things is because they are all entirely possible! You can live in the state of grace, the state of bliss, the dream of heaven."

Can you dare to imagine? Remember, eternal life is now.  It's time to get started fully being yourself and living your greatest happiness and most fulfilling life.
